Francis “Pierre” Hanley passed away on January 6, 2020, due to natural causes at his residence near Hays, Montana. Wake services will begin on January 10, 2020 at 6:00pm in the Mission Recreation Center in Hays, Montana. Funeral Services will be January 11, 2020 at 11:00am the Mission Recreation Center. Burial will follow at Mission Cemetery
Pierre was born on September 7, 1952 to Wilmer (Bud) and Teresa Hanley in Pierre, South Dakota. This was where his nickname Pierre originated from. Pierre grew up in Wakpala, South Dakota and had many adventurous stories about his childhood there. He attended school at Wakpala School. In his younger days, Pierre worked with his uncle Tyrus at the Tyrus Cadotte Ranch. He worked with his brother-in-law Gordon Honeyman for BNSF railroad for four years in Washington State and Montana as a spiker.
In 1984, Pierre moved to Hays, Montana to work for Harold “Prune” Martin and that was where met his wife Shannon Rose Brockie. They were united in marriage in 1984 and Prune served as his best man. Pierre and Shan had two daughters, Mauna Loa Brockie and Jade Maria Teresa Hanley, and one son, Tyler James Hanley, Sr. Pierre was blessed with six grandchildren. Tyrus Brockie whom he raised as his own, his baby girl Joshanna Brockie, his special granddaughter Kiera Jean Gardipee , grandson Tyler James Hanley, Jr., and his youngest granddaughters Tela and Winter Garcia. Pierre was also blessed with a great-grandson as well, Brickie John Brockie.
Pierre made a living doing various things, but his main profession was that of a Montana Indian Firefighter. His firefighting career lasted for over 20 years, during which time he was promoted to crew boss. Pierre received recognition for his leadership abilities as a crew boss, and one of Pierre’s proudest days as a crew boss was when his son Tyler joined his crew. Pierre’s firefighting career allowed him to travel many places in the United States, and meet many friends along the way. Pierre always had encouraging words for his friends and family. His calm, friendly demeanor made him one of the easiest going people you could come across. In 2017, Pierre gave his life to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
Pierre leaves behind by his wife, Shannon, daughter and son in law Mauna Loa Brockie and Rusty Garcia, son Tyler James Hanley, Sr., Tyrus (Taylor) Brockie, his baby girl Joshanna Brockie, grandchildren Kiera Jean Gardipee, Tyler James Hanley, Jr., Tela and Winter Garcia, and also great-grandson Brickie John Brockie. Pierre is also survived by his two daughters Reta Hanley, Mobridge, SD and Toni Hanley, White Horse, SD.; his Four Sisters Cleo (Hanley) Nordstrom, Bismarck, ND, Helen Hanley, Selfridge, ND, Virginia (Dolly -Holy Bull) Weaselboy, Albuquerque NM, Joan (Hanley) Rousseau, Promise, SD, and his brother Richard Hanley, Sr. Solen, ND along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by Grandparents John J. Cadotte and Hattie (McClean) Cadotte, George Hanley and Gertrude (Duncan) Mad Bear; parents Wilmer (Bud) Hanley, Sr and Teresa Marie (Cadotte) Hanley; brothers, David Hanley, Daniel Hanley, Robert (Joe) Hanley, Sr., Winston Hanley, Wilmer Hanley, Jr, and Donny DeMarrias; uncles, Aaron Cadotte and Tyrus Cadotte; his beautiful daughter Jade Marie Hanley, whom he had a special bond with and two grandbabies, Red Cradle Girl and Bronson James Hanley.
